It’s been a week since we brought this crazy guy home and it has been absolutely nuts! I’d love to say that it’s been a wonderful week of puppy cuddles, but between all the peeing, pooping, chewing and even diarrhea, this guy has had us running around like chickens with our heads cut off. I keep finding myself wondering if Gabbar was this difficult, but I really can’t remember him being this hard. Gabbar was a big goofball whereas Zeke is feisty and independent. Gabbar was eager to please and cautious, but it seems like nothing can scare Zeke. He will openly nip at poor Gabbar and bark back at him when Gabbar’s had enough. He’s also very vocal. He barks at everything! He’s barked at me when I didn’t let him eat a rock, he barks and fights his food bowls until he’s spilled everything on the ground, and he barks endlessly when we try to crate him during the day.
Another stark difference I notice between him and Gabbar is that Gabbar was affectionate and loved to cuddle. Zeke seems to keep a bit of a distance and only really ever comes close to us to nip at us. I understand that this probably has a lot to do with Zeke’s history. He was only in the shelter for a few hours (and everyone we met was wonderful) but we have no idea where he came from before that. We don’t know how his owner treated him and we don’t know what kind of breeder he came from. I do know that whoever had him put no effort into training him. He literally pees every ten minutes. I’m not exaggerating, I’ve actually started timing it. He had no self control with food but now we make him sit and wait until he’s calm and he’s really starting to get it.
I really believe that Zeke could have been leaps and bounds ahead of where he is had someone put some time into training him, but I know we’ll get there.
On the bright side, I know he’s a really smart dog and I can’t wait to see how much we can teach him. He’s not crying when we put him in his crate at night and he’s even slept through the night once. He loves everyone, dogs and humans alike, and they love him right back. Seriously, this guy stops everyone in their path. And let’s face it, no matter how much work he is, his adorable face just melts my heart every time I look at him.
